Dr. Wael Mualla was born in Damascus, Syria in 1955. In 1976 he obtained his BSc degree in Civil Engineering from Damascus University, and in 1985 he obtained his PhD in Civil Engineering Hydraulics from Strathclyde University, UK. He served as Vice Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Damascus University from 1993 to 1999, as Vice President of Damascus University from 2004 to 2005 and as President of Damascus University from 2005 to 2011. From 2011 to 2013, he was appointed as President of the International University of Science and Technology (IUST) in Syria. From 2014 to 2018 he was appointed as Associate Head of the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society at Heriot Watt University, Dubai Branch. He is currently Professor at the International University of Science and Technology, Syria, and the Head of the Board of Trustees of Al-Manara University, Latakia, Syria. Dr. Mualla has numerous publications in the fields of hydraulics, hydrology, water management, and higher education policies.
